From renting to owning: Zoe and Alfie’s first home at Brook Manor
For Zoe and Alfie, buying their first home once felt like a distant goal.
After renting in Exeter, they began comparing their monthly rent with potential mortgage repayments and exploring the support available to first-time buyers. What had initially seemed out of reach soon began to feel possible.
As Zoe explains, “When you compare the cost of a mortgage with rent, they can actually be very similar. When you also consider the opportunities available with a new build, such as deposit contributions and other added extras, we thought this could be an amazing opportunity for us to get onto the property ladder.”
The couple started exploring new-build developments around Exeter, looking for a well-connected location, a good-quality home and enough space for everyday life.
When they visited Brook Manor, on the edge of Alphington, they quickly felt they had found the right place. The location, quality of the homes and space available for their budget all stood out.
Finding the right first home
As Zoe and Alfie both work from home several times a week, they needed a property with flexible space.
The Cornwood gave them room for a practical home office, while still leaving enough space for a double bed when family came to stay. For them, it was the clear choice.
Being able to move into a finished home was another important benefit. When moving day arrived, they could simply add their furniture and begin settling in.
Since moving to Brook Manor in February 2026, the house has quickly become much more than their first property.
“This home is our sanctuary,” says Zoe. “It’s our office, our space to spend time together and somewhere we can welcome our family.”
Space for everyday life
Storage was another key part of their decision.
The Cornwood includes storage beneath the stairs and a storage cupboard in the kitchen, while each of the three bedrooms has room for wardrobes and cabinets.
For Zoe and Alfie, having practical storage means they can keep their home organised without losing valuable living space.
“We have all the space we could possibly need and more,” says Zoe.
Together, the generous space and practical storage give them a home that works for their lives now, with room to grow into in the future.
Making the move feel possible
For many first-time buyers, knowing where to begin can be one of the hardest parts. The process can feel unfamiliar, particularly when there are mortgages, incentives and paperwork to understand.
Zoe and Alfie had plenty of questions, but the support they received from the Brook Manor team helped make everything feel clearer.
“When you’re a first-time buyer, you have a really long list of things you simply don’t know,” says Zoe. “The sales team were absolutely incredible, and I don’t think we could have done it without them.”
They particularly valued Eleanor’s support. She took the time to explain each stage, answer their questions and talk them through their new home.
That guidance continued after moving day, giving them reassurance that help was still available whenever they needed it.
Feeling at home
Zoe and Alfie have also quickly become part of the community at Brook Manor.
They have spent time with their neighbours over barbecues, board games and relaxed evenings together, helping the development feel like home from the beginning.
“It’s been so lovely to become part of such a kind community,” says Zoe.
Looking back, she describes the experience of buying and settling into their first home as “comfortable, easy and simply amazing”.
Her advice to anyone unsure whether they can make the move is to explore their options and ask for guidance.
“Come and have a look,” she says. “There’s something for everyone, the sales team are awesome and the location is fantastic.”
For Zoe and Alfie, what began as a conversation about the cost of renting has resulted in a home of their own, more space for everyday life and a community they are proud to be part of.
