Kalyani wanted village life within reach of her work in Cambridge. Buying a new-build home for the first time as a single parent, she also wanted someone she could trust to answer her questions.
Around six months after moving to Kings Park, Kalyani had put plenty of time into her garden. Spending time there, along with getting out for walks nearby, had helped her settle into her new surroundings.
“I love living in my home. I love gardening,” she says.
These interests help explain what Kalyani was looking for when she began her search. She works in Cambridge and wanted to explore the villages to the north of the city, looking for a setting that brought together access to work and the outdoor surroundings she enjoys.
Kings Park in Cottenham caught her attention for its traditional-looking homes and village location. Visiting the first phase also gave her a chance to see the quality of the homes for herself.
The setting appealed to her. But when Kalyani talks about what most influenced her decision to buy, she returns to the people who helped her along the way.
“Somebody I could trust”
As a single parent buying a new-build home for the first time, Kalyani placed particular importance on having someone she could rely on for information.
“It was really important to have somebody I could trust,” she explains.
Michelle in the sales office became that person. Her availability and willingness to answer questions helped Kalyani make her decision.
“Michelle in the sales office was crucial in helping me make the decision, answering my questions, being available, being friendly, responsive.”
For Kalyani, those practical qualities mattered: being able to ask what she needed to know, getting a response and trusting the answers she received. She describes the buying experience as the strongest influence on her decision to choose her home.
When it came to moving, having a reliable idea of when the property would be ready helped her organise leaving her previous home.
“The property was ready pretty much on time from the date I was given, so I was able to plan moving out of my previous property.”
The team also took her through the house and gave her the information she needed for the next steps, including following up on snagging. Looking back, she describes moving in as a fairly smooth experience.
Making Kings Park her own
Once she had moved in, Kalyani began getting to know life in Cottenham. She regularly uses the local Co-op and has visited the village hairdresser. She also appreciates the community feel of Kings Park and the way the development is laid out.
Walking has become one of her greatest pleasures in the location. As someone who loves getting outside and also has a dog, she enjoys having places to walk close to home.
Her garden has been another important part of settling in. It is somewhere she has invested her own time and now enjoys spending it.
“I’ve invested a lot of time doing my garden, so I spend a lot of time in it.”
For Kalyani, these everyday parts of life help explain why the move has worked for her. Cambridge remains within reach for work, while being at home gives her the opportunity to enjoy walking, gardening and village life.
As she puts it: “These few things have really helped me settle.”
