Currently working at Sycamore Park in Driffield, Castleford-based Ben was promoted to the role following a two-year programme as Trainee Assistant Site Manager. However, this is not Ben’s first promotion within the business. He initially joined Kier Living (now Tilia Homes) in 2017 as a labourer and in just four short years has achieved the prestigious role of Assistant Site Manager.
Ben was able to rise through the ranks within the business due to using his initiative, shadowing senior employees and taking on extra responsibility in each role he has performed.
Ben said: “I have always had an interest in the construction industry, so I joined Kier Living’s Northern region in 2017 as a labourer, hoping to learn more about housebuilding. Straight away I was eager to improve my knowledge and so once my feet were under the table, I began to take on extra responsibility, such as finishing houses for completion and getting involved in learning about processes outside of my job description.
“Colleagues have always been really forthcoming in showing me the ropes, which helped me to gain a better understanding of the different processes on site and enabled me to show senior team members my drive and ambition to progress.”
As an Assistant Site Manager, Ben is responsible for supporting the Site Manager with day-to-day activities on site, including daily health and safety checks, managing contractors and suppliers, and ensuring the relevant materials arrive at site on time. Ben also manages the site himself when the Site Manager is absent.
Ben continues: “I really enjoy my role as an Assistant Site Manager. My main responsibilities focus heavily on health and safety, ensuring a safe working environment for Tilia staff and contractors, and checking in with the various suppliers on site to maintain a consistently high level of build. The best thing about my job is being able to see the process from start to finish – starting with an empty plot of land and eventually seeing the homes be built, to moving in happy customers on completion day.
“I also take a lot of pride in aftercare and try to go above and beyond with any new home buyers, keeping in touch with them for around a month after they complete to ensure they continue to have a positive experience with us. The job satisfaction you get from being a site manager is second to none.”
Rick Long, Regional Managing Director at Tilia Homes Northern, said: “We’re really proud of Ben for how he has risen through the ranks at Kier Living and then Tilia Homes. He always puts 100% into every task and goes far beyond his job description to expand his knowledge of the industry, and is always thinking ahead to the next role, looking at how he can learn more from fellow colleagues to develop his skills.
“He really is a testament to the team at Sycamore Park and our Northern region, and we can’t wait to see him continue to learn and develop and look towards another promotion to Site Manager in the coming years.”
