Eager pupils enjoyed a lesson on housebuilding from the experts at Kier Living (Eastern) during a special assembly at Gamlingay Village College.

The housebuilder is currently working on Millbrook Meadows, a six-acre site less than a mile from the school, which comprises 85 new two, three and four-bedroom homes. The Year Six pupils have taken a keen interest in the development and, as part of their literacy lessons, had analysed the marketing material used to promote the site and designed their own Millbrook Meadows brochures.

Eager to encourage the students’ interest, Kier Living sponsored the brochure design competition and provided prizes for the winner and two runners up. Ben Smith, project manager at Millbrook Meadows, and Peter Fallon, development sales manager, were invited by the school to speak to students and present the prizes.

Colette Rider, literacy leader at the school, said: “The children were really inspired by the project and thoroughly enjoyed learning more about Millbrook Meadows.”

Ben Smith added: “It was brilliant to come and meet the children and to see how interested they were in the site. We were really impressed by the quality of their brochure designs and hope we’ve inspired a few students to consider a career in housebuilding!”

With the start of the summer holidays just days away, Ben, who recently won top NHBC Awards for Health and Safety and Pride in the Job, also stressed the dangers of playing on building sites.

Millbrook Meadows is expected to reach completion in 2015 and houses are selling fast.
