Senior staff have dug the first piece of turf at the site, off Cambridge Road, to signify the start of the development, which will include play equipment and open spaces for residents when finished.
In total, the new development will see 77 new homes built in the sought-after Suffolk village.
David Thomas, Kier Living Eastern’s sales and marketing director, said construction workers are now on site carrying out preliminary works for the homes.
He said: “We are delighted to have started work on our new development in Long Melford.
“It is a wonderful village and the site really benefits from beautiful views of the countryside.
“These superb homes will be perfect for couples, expanding families and those looking to downsize and we very much look forward to continuing to work with the community in the future to make these homes a success.”
Kier Living Eastern was granted planning permission for the development following consultations with residents and local authorities.
Foundations are expected to be put in at the site as early as July, and new homes could be available as early as spring 2018.
