Living in Torquay
One of the jewels in Devon’s crown, Torquay is a seaside town in the South West of the UK. The town is a popular location for those looking to retire by the seaside as well as younger families with several new developments in the area.
If you’re a fan of literature, then you’re in luck. Agatha Christie was born in the town and lived at Ashfield, in Torquay, during her early years of writing. You can head down the "Agatha Christie Mile", a tour with plaques dedicated to her life and work.
Torquay has several beaches including Oddicombe Beach and Meadfoot Beach, both of which have held European Blue Flag status since 2012.
The town also has a rich sporting history, particularly for water sports due to the favourable east-facing bay. This tradition was upheld with the 1948 Summer Olympics partially taking place in Torquay. The Olympic flame was transferred from London to Torre Abbey Gardens to reside throughout the event.
The Surrounding Area
Torquay is part of the stunning county of Devon where you will find beautiful bays and beaches on your doorstep. Seaside resorts such as Woolacombe and Ilfracombe are only a short drive away with neighbouring Cornwall also a short trip.
You can also visit some of the national sites that surround Torquay including the art and historical collections at Torre Abbey. Kents Caverns is also a short distance away, with prehistoric caves to explore. Alternatively, you can visit Paignton Zoo, perfect for a family day trip to see animals from across the world.
There are two train stations in Torquay and the town is also connected to the UK motorway network by the A380, meaning major cities across the UK, including Exeter, are accessible.
