Eight great things to do in Norfolk
Known for its incredible birdlife, boating adventures in the Broads National Park, and some of the best beaches in the UK Norfolk is packed with plenty of things to see, do and explore.
Whether you’re thinking of moving to this beautiful part of the country or you’re already lucky enough to call it home, here are eight great things to do in Norfolk to add to your weekend wish list.
- Set sail on the Norfolk broads
The Norfolk Broads are one of the county’s most iconic natural wonders. With over 125 miles of calm, winding waterways, it’s the perfect spot to slow down and enjoy the scenery.
Hire a boat for a laid-back day on the water, join a guided river tour to learn about the wildlife, or explore by foot and enjoy a walk along the water’s edge. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for herons, kingfishers, and the famous Norfolk windmills. Popular spots like Wroxham, often called the ‘capital of the Broads’, and the pretty riverside village of Horning are perfect places to start your adventure.
- Breathe in the fresh air at Holkham Beach
Holkham Beach is easily one of the UK’s most stunning stretches of coastline. With miles of golden sand and gentle dunes, it feels wonderfully unspoilt. Even on sunny weekends when it gets busier, there’s always plenty of space to stretch out and soak up the scenery.
Just a short walk away, Holkham Hall offers even more to enjoy. The 18th-century Palladian mansion is surrounded by beautiful gardens, a deer park and a lovely cafe, which is ideal for a post-beach coffee and cake.
- Explore the historic city of Norwich
Norwich is Norfolk’s biggest city where you’ll find lots of interesting things to do. You’ll discover history around every corner, from the cobbled streets of Elm Hill to the impressive Norwich Cathedral and Norwich Castle, which now has a museum and art gallery.
It's also great for shopping and has a mix of independent shops and popular high-street stores to choose from. Norwich Market, one of the UK’s largest open-air markets is a must-visit too and offers everything from tasty street food to handmade gifts.
- Walk through Sandringham Estate
The royal family’s private countryside retreat, Sandringham Estate, is open to visitors for most of the year and it’s every bit as beautiful as you’d expect.
You can explore the elegant house, the 60-acre garden and surrounding parkland, which comes alive with colour in spring and autumn. Well-marked walks wind through meadows and ancient woodlands, making it a lovely location for a weekend ramble. Then after your walk, grab a drink at the cafe or pick up something to take home from the gift shop.
- See the seals at Blakeney Point
For one of the most memorable days out in Norfolk, visit Morston Quay and take a boat ride out to Blakeney Point, which is one of the largest seal colonies in the UK.
The boat ride lasts around 90-minutes and is perfect for the whole family. Don’t forget to bring your binoculars and your camera as you’ll often spot common and grey seals. The best time to go is between November and January, when you might even spot adorable grey seal pups too!
- Cycle through the peaceful Norfolk countryside
If you love exploring on two wheels, Norfolk’s landscape is perfect for cycling. With mostly flat terrain and scenic rural routes, it’s ideal for all ages and levels of experience.
Try the Norfolk Coast Cycleway for a beautiful route around the shoreline, winding through quiet villages, wildflower meadows and past windmills. Plus, there are plenty of places to stop for a picnic or a refreshing drink in a village pub.
- Tuck into fish and chips in Cromer
Cromer is a classic seaside town, and it’s famous for its gorgeous pier, sandy beaches and delicious sea food.
Pick up a portion of fish and chips and enjoy the overlooking the sea, or sample the famous Cromer crab, a sweet and tender local delicacy. Afterwards, take a stroll along the promenade, visit the amusements or grab an ice cream from one of the many cafes lining the seafront.
- Have a wild day at Pensthorpe Natural Park
Just outside Fakenham, Pensthorpe Natural Park is a fantastic family-friendly day out in Norfolk. It combines nature, wildlife and fun with plenty of animals to spot, including red squirrels, ducks and geese.
If you’re visiting with kids, they’ll love the outdoor play area, and there’s plenty to do indoors too if the weather takes a turn.
